Matíari, a story of firsts
matíari CELEBRATES several firsts
- Matíari, pronounced MAH-tee-AH-ree, means “the first” in the language of the Huichol tribe of Mexico.
- Honoring the origins of tequila, we use many traditional methods once practiced by the Huichol to craft our tequila, who were among the first to distill agave in pot stills in Mexico.
- Matíari is the first tequila commercially produced at the historic Tateposco distillery, believed to be the earliest site of vino mezcal distillation, dating back to 1830.
- Our statue Amilli symbolizes the fertile soil that gives life to agaves. She stands at our distillery as a tribute to the land—the natural origin of both agave and the spirit it yields.
Distilling Tradition
Since 1830
Single Farm Agaves: We hand-select mature agaves from a single estate, giving us full control over quality and character.
brick oven roasting: Slow, even cooking in traditional ovens caramelizes natural sugars for a deeper, more nuanced flavor.
tahona stone crush: This time-honored method gently crushes agave, preserving rich fibers and enhancing complexity.
distilled in pot stills: Using both copper and stainless steel stills, we refine the spirit for purity, balance, and bold flavor.
